The Krimml Waterfall

The amount of water is tied to the vast catchment area of the Krimml Ache (109.9 km²), of which 12.2% is glaciated (11.1 km²).

This makes the Krimml Ache a typical glacier-fed stream, with strongly fluctuating water levels throughout the day and across the year. In the months of June and July, the discharge is 30 to 40 times greater than in February. Since the meltwater takes 9–12 hours to travel from the glacier gate to the falls (18 km), the daily peak discharge occurs between 9 p.m. and midnight.

The highest discharge ever recorded occurred during the flood on August 25, 1987. At that flow rate, the amount of water would have been sufficient to fill the daily balancing basin of the Salzburg AG power plant — which holds 65 million liters — in just 6 minutes. With an average flow, it would take over 3 hours, and at low water levels 100 hours.

(Slupetzky, Wiesenegger)

  • Mean low flow (MNQ): 0.356 m³/sec
  • Mean flow (MQ): 5.61 m³/sec
  • Mean high flow (MHQ): 57.2 m³/sec

Hohensalzburg FortressHohensalzburg FortressHohensalzburg FortressHohensalzburg Fortress

History of Hohensalzburg Fortress

Built in 1077 by the prince-archbishop Gebhard I of Helffenstein during the Investiture Controversy between the German Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII.

Archbishop Gebhard was forced into exile in 1085, and his castle project was only completed under his successors. Today, it is considered Europe’s largest fortress complex, with more than 14,000 m² of built area. The fortress is federally owned but has been administered by the Province of Salzburg since 1953.

The fortress consists of the palace built in Romanesque masonry, the residential section that still forms the core of the “Hoher Stock” today. Numerous auxiliary buildings and a castle church, typical elements of a fortress complex, are also part of the site.

Throughout the year, numerous events enliven the fortress, its romantic courtyard, and the bastions.

Since the late 19th century, Hohensalzburg Fortress has been repurposed. Today, it can be reached in the most convenient way by the funicular railway, which takes just under one minute to ascend.

On a Treasure Hunt in the Hallein Salt Mines

In the past, salt was known as “white gold” – and indeed, the deposits formed millions of years ago in the Dürrnberg near Hallein are the region’s true treasure chamber. As early as 2,500 years ago, the Celts mined this precious gift of the mountain, as proven by the impressive traces they left behind.

In the world’s oldest visitor mine, young and old explorers from the age of four can set off on a treasure hunt – following the mysterious, ancient tunnels of the miners for kilometers deep into the mystical mountain…

Preparation for Your Visit:

Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended. Even in summer, temperatures usually remain below zero. At the cave entrance, visitors are equipped with mining lamps. Inside, magnesium lighting provides a dramatic illumination of the icy sculptures. The cave itself is a protected historical site and may only be entered with authorized guides.

Physical Requirements:

During the cave visit, a total of 134 meters of elevation must be overcome, which is roughly equivalent to walking up the stairwell of a large high-rise building. It is the responsibility of each visitor to judge whether they are able to manage the physical exertion involved. Undoubtedly, however, the beauty of the ice figures and the impressive scale of the cave make every effort worthwhile! The pace of the guided tour is adjusted according to the composition of the visiting group. Nevertheless, the cave visit is not recommended for people with severe walking difficulties or cardiovascular conditions.
